Loss in close match
In tonight's good weather, there was a match in the second-best women's league on the schedule. ÍF played against KÍ, and many people had gone down to Fløtugerð to support the women as the third round was to be played. ÍF was in 6th place on the standings and KÍ was in 8th place.
The first 11 for ÍF were: Anna Antoniussen, Annika Christiansen, Jónfríð Olsen, Sigrid Petersen, Mary-Ann Zahariassen, Gunrið á Lakjuni, Marta Thomsen, Kristina Obradovic, Jenny Reinert-Petersen, Glæma Petersen, and Erla Róin. A good mix of young and older players form the team.
The referee was Annika Breiðaskarð.
KÍ started the match better and immediately applied high pressure, but it was ÍF who had the first chance. Erla tried from 25 meters, but there was not enough power in the shot. The ÍF team quickly played themselves out of the pressure and worked their way well up the field. Glæma, who played in midfield today, played a good match. When about 10 minutes had been played, KÍ got a great chance, which they missed. Their hope was played completely loose on the left side, but they missed, despite being alone with the goalkeeper.
The match is now very even, although KÍ has more half chances. The ÍF team seems well organized, especially the midfield and ÍF defense, which played well out of the pressure that KÍ occasionally put on. 15 minutes played, and ÍF gets a free kick just outside the penalty area on the right side. The veteran, Erla Róin, is set to take it and hits the crossbar. A good opportunity and a good shot from Erla, who played a good match. KÍ played several times up against the ÍF defense and several half-dangerous situations arose from this, but the defense either drew offside or stood well organized and got the ball away. Many shots were on goal in the next few minutes, and both teams wanted to score, but the quality of the shots was not good enough, and nothing special happened. Half-time. ÍF has a corner on the right side. The ball comes well inside, and a header goes straight across the goal. A big chance. 43 minutes. Jenny finds Mary-Ann, plays it in around the KÍ defense, but Mary-Ann is tackled in the shot, and nothing comes of it. A good opportunity and good play from ÍF. Then it happens, what shouldn't happen. ÍF loses the ball on the left side, L. Joensen from KÍ hits it from the outside, and the ball ends up in Anna's ÍF goal. 0-1 to KÍ just before half-time.
The beginning of the second half is similar to the first. KÍ tries to push, but it is ÍF that has the first chance, but the opportunity is missed. Annika Christiansen, who is playing for ÍF, stands like a wall in midfield and denies ball after ball. A true asset for women's football in Fuglafjørður to have someone like Annika. 32 minutes played. Jenny makes a pass over KÍ's defense, but unfortunately the shot goes straight to the goalkeeper. KÍ then increases their lead to 2-0, but ÍF does not give up. There are many half-chances for both teams, but it doesn't really become a problem. When there are only 10 minutes left, ÍF shows good play, which ends with Annika reducing the lead to the final score of 1-2. If luck had been on ÍF's side in the final moments, the outcome could well have been a draw in my opinion.
In conclusion, it was a tough match with few clear chances. Both teams showed good effort and with effort, one can go far. Female referees are not often seen in the Faroe Islands. Annika Breiðaskarð, who led the match, did a good job.
There is no doubt that women's football in Fuglafjørður has improved. The fighting spirit is present, but there is still something missing before they can offer their best. But hey, things take time and with a mix of young and old and a more stable approach to younger players, like Eyðum Ryggshamar, I expect that it won't be long until we see ÍF women in the top league.
